Volunteer workcamp (2-9 November 2008)
in the National park «Ugra»
From 2-9 November 2008, nine volunteers from Moscow, Voronezh, and Monchegorsk came to the National park «Ugra», which is situated in the Kaluga region, in the Central part of Russia. Ugra is not only famous for its very beautiful nature, but also its rich history; in the end of 1480 the Great Standoff on the Ugra river took place here. Now the territory of the National park, this gem of the Central region of Russia is known for its dense forests, boundless fields, and picturesque rivers. Wolves, bears, boars, and elks inhabit its forests, its rivers are full of fish, and even a very rare Russian muskrat is found here.
During the camp, volunteers worked at a site of ancient settlement called "Opakovskoe gorodishche." People settled here more than two thousand years ago, but this historical site is also very important because remains of a Lithuanian watch tower from the 13 century were found here. There are no similar finds in Russia and Europe. Our task as volunteers was to clean the site for further archaeological works, to build the descent to the river bank and a rail for a bridge, and to prepare the ecological base for winter.
Park staff organized several excursions for volunteers. We visited a place where bloody fights took place during the Second World War, where there is now an historical-memorial path with restored trenches.
If you are interested in participation in such workcamps, join us – we warmly invite all volunteers! In doing so, you will experience the beauty of Russian parks and contribute to their protection. Plan now to join us for the next event!
